There are less than three months left until the 3rd European Race Walking Team Championships, which are being hosted by the Central Bohemian spa town of Poděbrady for the third time in a row. What can we look forward to during the race weekend?

After 2021 and 2023, Poděbrady will host the European Race Walking Team Championships (ERWTCH) for the third time in 2025. The clash of the elite walkers of the old continent will take place on Sunday 18 May.

Pérez smashes 35km world record
María Peréz became the world record 35-kilometre holder at the European Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Poděbrady with a time of 2:37:15. The 27-year old Spaniard surpassed the performance of the Peruvian Kimberly García León from the Dudince meeting two months ago by 29 seconds. After a silver medal at ERWTCH two years ago in Poděbrady and fourth place at the Olympics, Pérez added her greatest accolade.

Before the European Race Walking Team Championships, the Czech Athletic Federation announced a creative competition for primary and kindergarten schools in Poděbrady, the main theme of which is walking. Each school could thus jointly create and present their art work in the form of drawings or spatial objects. The announcement will take place in the Fan Zone of the championships on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The past and present of Poděbrady Race Walking meeting
The first walking race from Prague to Poděbrady was organized in 1894 as a club championship by the Pedestrian Club Královské Vinohrady and the winner was František Malý at 5:50. After a long break, the race was not resumed until 1929 by the AC Praha 1890 club in preparation for the newly entered 50km distance for the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic Games; since then, it has been held annually except for the war period 1941-1944, since 1947 with international participation. The original route from Prague's Karlín to the spa colonnade in Poděbrady was a test for pedestrians of courage, perseverance and the ability to overcome themselves.
